PRO-Link Announces Higher Rated Capacities for Hayspears® and HAYSTIX® Bale Spears
True & Tested
For farmers, ranchers, equipment dealers, and attachment builders, a bale spear’s rated capacity matters. It helps you choose equipment for the bales you handle, compare spear options, and understand the limits of your complete setup. Today, PRO-Link has important news about two of our core bale spear lines: new testing supports higher rated capacities for our 1⅝-inch Hayspears® and 1¾-inch HAYSTIX® spears.
Our 1⅝-inch Hayspears® line, previously rated at 3,000 pounds, has increased to 3,750 pounds. Our 1¾-inch HAYSTIX® line, previously rated at 3,500 pounds, has increased to 4,000 pounds. PRO-Link has witnessed and documented the testing behind these updated figures.
| Bale spear line | Previous rating | New rating | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1⅝-inch Hayspears® | 3,000 lb | 3,750 lb | 750 lb (25%) |
| 1¾-inch HAYSTIX® | 3,500 lb | 4,000 lb | 500 lb (about 14%) |
These figures describe the newly announced spear-line ratings. Check the updated specifications for the exact spear model before using a new capacity in an equipment decision. Some specialty spears and complete attachments have their own published ratings. The capacity of a spear also does not increase the rated capacity of the loader, frame, mounting hardware, or any other part of the system.
Why We Retested Our Bale Spears
PRO-Link has spent years supplying bale spears for people who work with hay every day. A spear may be used to pull a dense round bale from storage, load a trailer, move hay to a feeding area, or handle square bales during a busy season. The number on its specification sheet should be backed by evidence that customers can understand and trust.
Our previous published ratings were 3,000 pounds for the standard 1⅝-inch Hayspears® line and 3,500 pounds for the standard 1¾-inch HAYSTIX® line. New testing gave us the opportunity to confirm what these products can support at a higher rated capacity. The witnessed results support the new 3,750-pound and 4,000-pound figures announced here.
For customers, the next step is to use the updated specifications for the particular product they own or plan to buy. The test method, load center, and model coverage determine how a published rating applies. Contact our team if you need to confirm those details for an individual spear. No single line-wide announcement establishes the capacity of every spear, attachment, or machine configuration.
Hayspears®: Now Rated at 3,750 Pounds
The 1⅝-inch Hayspears® line has long given customers a practical option for everyday bale handling. Many Hayspears® models use a fluted profile, which helps the spear enter and leave dense or tightly packed bales. The line includes different lengths and mounting arrangements, so customers can choose a spear that matches their frame and the way they work.
The previous 3,000-pound rating served as a familiar reference point. The new tested rating of 3,750 pounds adds 750 pounds, a 25% increase over that earlier figure. For a customer comparing bale spears, that is a meaningful update. It also gives dealers and equipment builders a reason to revisit specifications that may have been saved or printed before this announcement.
Consider a hay operation that handles heavy bales after rain, during winter feeding, or in a high-density crop. Bale weight can vary substantially with moisture, size, and compression. A current, model-specific rating helps the operator compare the spear with the actual load and the capacities of the rest of the equipment. The higher Hayspears® figure provides new information for that comparison; it is never a substitute for checking the complete setup.
Hayspears® are available in tapered, cross-bolt, and bracketed configurations. Those mounting choices matter. A properly selected and installed spear must be supported by a compatible sleeve or bracket, suitable hardware, sound welds where applicable, and a frame designed for the work. Customers replacing a spear should match its geometry and mounting style to their existing equipment rather than selecting on diameter or capacity alone.
If you currently use a 1⅝-inch Hayspears® product, look up your exact model and its updated documentation. If you are buying a new spear, tell us the model, mounting arrangement, machine, and type of bales you handle. We can help you identify the correct published specifications for that product.
HAYSTIX®: Now Rated at 4,000 Pounds
The 1¾-inch HAYSTIX® line has been a core choice for demanding hay-handling applications. The familiar square-profile HAYSTIX® spear, including our popular 49TXJ assembly, is used in bale movers and hay frames where reach, fit, and secure mounting all matter. Depending on the model, HAYSTIX® products use different retention and mounting arrangements, including PRO-Link’s Doublenut® system on applicable tapered assemblies.
The standard 1¾-inch line previously carried a 3,500-pound rating. New testing supports a 4,000-pound rating, an increase of 500 pounds, or approximately 14%. This is welcome news for customers who rely on HAYSTIX® spears and for dealers explaining the differences between the two PRO-Link spear families.
The new figure also makes it especially important to use current product information. Older web pages, catalogs, printed sheets, and dealer listings may still show 3,500 pounds while updates are being made. Some HAYSTIX® specialty products have dimensions or model-specific ratings that differ from the standard 1¾-inch line. Confirm the rating on the exact item you are buying or operating rather than applying the 4,000-pound figure to every product carrying the HAYSTIX® name.
For example, a spear-only replacement and a complete assembly with its sleeve and retaining hardware are different purchases. A higher rating for the spear does not automatically establish a higher rating for an older collar, bracket, weld, frame, or finished bale mover. The correct choice depends on the full system and its condition.
What a Higher Spear Rating Means in the Field
These increases give customers stronger published capacity figures for the applicable bale spears. They do not mean that every tractor, skid steer, loader, or attachment can now lift a heavier bale. The working limit of a complete hay-handling setup is governed by its lowest-rated component and the machine manufacturer’s operating limits.
Before putting any spear to work, check the actual bale weight or a sound estimate based on bale size, crop, density, and moisture. Then check the machine’s rated lifting ability under the intended conditions, along with the attachment frame, coupler, spear mounting, sleeve or bracket, retaining hardware, welds, and any other supporting components. Load position and distance from the machine affect the lift as well. A rating quoted for one load-center condition should not be assumed to apply at a different distance.
The condition of the equipment matters, too. Inspect spears for bending, damage, or excessive wear. Check sleeves, bolts, nuts, brackets, and welds before use, especially on equipment that has seen years of heavy service. Use the correct number and placement of spears and stabilizers for the bales and attachment. Follow the machine and attachment manufacturers’ instructions and keep loads low during transport.
If you are building or modifying a frame, have a qualified fabricator or engineer review the full design and installation. A spear’s published capacity is an important input, but it does not rate a custom-built attachment by itself.
Get the Right Rating for Your Model
We are proud to share these results because they establish higher rated capacities in two lines customers already know. The 1⅝-inch Hayspears® line moves from 3,000 to 3,750 pounds, while the 1¾-inch HAYSTIX® line moves from 3,500 to 4,000 pounds. PRO-Link has retained its test documentation to support the updated claims.
As we update product information, please use the latest model-specific specifications for purchasing and operating decisions. If an older page or catalog shows a different rating, contact PRO-Link with the part number so we can confirm the applicable current figure and documentation. Dealers can also contact us for updated information to share with their customers.
At PRO-Link, we want every capacity claim to help you make a better equipment decision. Review the specifications for your exact spear, and choose a complete hay-handling setup that matches the work in front of you.
