Doublenut® Bale Spear Mounting System: How It Works
Moving hay across a field, feedlot, barnyard, or storage area sends vibration through the machine, attachment frame, sleeve, and bale spear. On a tapered bale spear assembly, the mounting hardware must hold the spear’s shank firmly against the matching seat in the sleeve. PRO-Link’s Doublenut® bale spear mounting system adds a second locking component to help the connection resist vibration-related loosening during repeated bale-handling cycles.
The Doublenut® system is used on HAYSTIX® tapered bale spear models. HAYSTIX® cross-bolt and bracketed spears use different mounting hardware.. Understanding the taper, sleeve, nuts, capacity, and inspection requirements will help operators and fabricators choose the correct assembly and maintain it properly.
What Is the Doublenut® Bale Spear Mounting System?
A compatible Doublenut® assembly brings three parts together:
- A bale spear with a tapered mounting shank and threaded end
- A matching tapered sleeve or collar installed in the attachment frame
- A conical retaining nut followed by a secondary jam nut
During assembly, the tapered shank passes through and seats inside the matching sleeve. Tightening the conical nut draws the two mating surfaces together. The second nut is then tightened against the first nut to help resist rotation caused by vibration and repeated handling.
That second nut is the practical difference. It helps the primary retaining nut remain in position, but it does not eliminate inspection, proper tightening, or maintenance. A loose nut, damaged thread, worn sleeve, cracked weld, bent spear, or distorted frame still requires attention. No mounting system should be described as maintenance-free or guaranteed never to loosen.
The taper is equally important. The nut system is designed to work with matching tapered surfaces, threads, seating depth, and clearance. Sleeve inside diameter alone cannot confirm compatibility.
Not Every HAYSTIX® Spear Uses Doublenut®
HAYSTIX® is a product family, not one mounting style. The lineup includes tapered, cross-bolt, bracketed, and specialty bale spears. Select tapered models use Doublenut® hardware; straight cross-hole and bracketed models use different retention methods.
- Tapered and nut-retained: The spear’s tapered shank seats in a matching collar. The applicable nut system draws and secures the connection.
- Cross-bolt: A straight spear and sleeve have aligned holes. A bolt passes through both parts to retain the spear.
- Bracketed: The spear uses the bracket and fasteners specified for that model. On applicable PRO-Link assemblies, the spear is cross-bolted to the bracket and the bracket attaches to the frame with U-bolts.
These systems are not interchangeable simply because two spears have a similar length or diameter. Before ordering a replacement, identify whether the existing spear is tapered, cross-bolted, or bracketed. Then compare the shank profile, threads, hole placement, sleeve or bracket, hardware, and available installation clearance.
Many core HAYSTIX® models use a 1.75-inch profile and have a published rating of 3,500 pounds at a 30-inch load center. Specialty multipurpose HAYSTIX® products may use a 1.375-inch profile and product-specific ratings. Always use the specifications on the exact product page instead of assigning a capacity from the brand name or diameter.
A Practical Example: The 49TXJ and 144T Sleeve


The 49TXJ best-selling bale spear is a clear example of the complete system. The assembly includes a 49-inch by 1.75-inch tapered HAYSTIX® tine, the matching 144T Conus II weld-in sleeve, and the applicable Doublenut® retaining hardware. Its published capacity is 3,500 pounds at a 30-inch load center.
A complete assembly and a replacement spear are not the same purchase. A PRO-Link model beginning with “S,” including spear-only replacement models, does not include a new sleeve or collar. Reusing an installed sleeve may be appropriate only when the existing collar, surrounding frame, and welds remain serviceable and the replacement spear has the correct mounting profile.
The 144T is the verified sleeve supplied with the complete 49TXJ. A replacement spear may also fit another properly matched Conus II sleeve, but the buyer must confirm more than the nominal inside diameter. The taper, depth, threads, nut arrangement, support, and working clearance must all match.

Installation and Replacement Checks
The sleeve is a weld-in fabrication component. A qualified fabricator should determine its orientation, projection, alignment, surrounding steel, weld preparation, and welding procedure for the completed bale-handling frame.
A sound installation process includes these basic checks:
- Confirm the exact spear model, sleeve profile, threads, nuts, and required clearance.
- Remove the spear and retaining hardware before welding the empty sleeve into the frame.
- Keep the collar correctly aligned and supported during fabrication.
- Allow the assembly to cool, then inspect the sleeve opening and remove debris or weld spatter that could interfere with seating.
- Insert the tapered shank and verify that it seats without binding, visible looseness, or thread interference.
- Tighten the conical nut correctly, then secure the jam nut against it.
- Inspect the completed frame, welds, spear alignment, hardware engagement, and operating clearance before use.

What the 49TXJ Test Demonstration Does—and Does Not—Mean

It does not raise the product’s published capacity, create a new working limit, or authorize an operator to exceed the rating.

The spear rating also does not establish the capacity of the complete bale attachment or machine. Safe working capacity is limited by the lowest-rated part of the system, which can include the spear, sleeve, nuts, welds, frame, coupler, loader, tires, ballast, hydraulics, and carrier. Bale weight varies with size, crop, density, and moisture, so appearance alone is not a dependable guide.
Inspection and Safer Bale Handling
Inspect the spear assembly before use and at intervals appropriate for its workload and operating environment. Check the point, shaft, tapered seat, threads, both nuts, sleeve, surrounding frame, and welds. Stop using the attachment if a component is loose, bent, cracked, distorted, badly worn, or otherwise damaged. Correct the cause instead of tightening hardware around a damaged mounting system.
A secure spear connection is only one part of safe operation. The machine and attachment must be properly matched to the bale, and the operator must account for the changing center of gravity.
