The 144T is different from a straight cross-hole sleeve. A cross-bolt system uses aligned holes through the tine and collar. With this tapered system, the spear’s mounting end seats inside the machined opening and the applicable retaining nuts secure it from the back. The Doublenut® mounting system uses a conical nut and a secondary jam nut on compatible HAYSTIX® models.

A qualified fabricator should determine the sleeve direction, projection, alignment, surrounding steel, weld preparation, and welding procedure required by the finished frame. Incorrect positioning can cause poor tine alignment, inadequate thread clearance, or uneven loading across a multi-spear carrier.

After the assembly cools, inspect the opening and remove any dirt, heavy scale, or weld spatter that could interfere with seating. Insert the matching mounting end through the collar, then install and tighten the correct nut system. The spear should seat fully without visible looseness, damaged threads, or interference between the collar and surrounding structure.

The sleeve does not determine which hay or bale shape the completed attachment can handle. Alfalfa, grass hay, straw, cornstalk bales, silage, and haylage vary in density and moisture. Round bales may be 4 × 4, 4 × 5, 5 × 5, or 5 × 6, while large square bales may be 3 × 3, 3 × 4, or 4 × 4. Actual suitability depends on bale weight, spear length, number of tines, stabilizers, frame design, and machine capacity.

Inspect the collar, internal seat, spear, nuts, surrounding tubing, and welds regularly. Stop using the attachment if the sleeve is cracked, distorted, loose, badly worn, or no longer holds the hay stab correctly. Replacing a collar does not restore strength to damaged frame steel or an inadequate attachment design.
