1. 49TXJ: PRO-Link’s Best-Selling Individual Bale Spear
The 49TXJ best-selling bale spear leads PRO-Link’s model ranking. It combines a 49-inch reach with a 1.75-inch square Conus II tapered spear and a published rating of 3,500 pounds at a 30-inch load center. The complete assembly includes the matching 144T weld-in sleeve and Doublenut® mounting hardware.
The tapered mounting end seats in the 144T sleeve. Tightening the first nut draws the matching tapered surfaces together, while the second nut locks against the first to help resist loosening from vibration and repeated bale-handling cycles. PRO-Link has also demonstrated the 49TXJ under an approximately 4,300- to 4,400-pound test load. That test shows how the company evaluates the product, but it does not raise the published working rating. 2. 48TS: A Tapered 1-5/8-Inch Hayspears® Assembly
The 48TS tapered bale spear ranks second. This 48-inch by 1.625-inch Hayspears® model has a fluted tapered profile and is rated at 3,000 pounds at a 30-inch load center. It is sold as a complete assembly with the S48T spear, 114T weld-in sleeve, and conical retaining nut.
Its tapered profile and fluted sides help the tine enter and release from dense bale material. The 48TS does not use the HAYSTIX® Doublenut® system. It uses the applicable single conical retaining nut supplied with the assembly. That distinction matters when identifying replacement hardware or comparing an existing frame with a new spear.
The 48TS is a practical choice when a buyer needs a complete 1-5/8-inch tapered assembly for a properly designed bale frame. As with every weld-in sleeve, the spear and hardware should be removed before welding, and the sleeve should cool before the tine is installed.
3. 48FX: The Current Name for the Former 48SX
The product ranked third was called the 48SX in the original article. PRO-Link’s current product record for the same SKU 053 is the 48FX bolt-on bale fork, so the updated ranking uses the current model name.
The 48FX is a 48-inch by 1.625-inch fluted, straight cross-hole spear rated at 3,000 pounds at a 30-inch load center. The complete package includes the 155 weld-in sleeve or collar, the cross-bolt, and the retaining nut. During installation, the spear slides into the cooled sleeve until the holes align. The bolt then passes through both components to retain the tine.
“Bolt-on” in the product name refers to the spear’s cross-bolt retention. The 155 sleeve is still welded into a suitable bale-handling frame. The 48FX should not be described as universally interchangeable with other 1.625-inch sleeves. A replacement requires the correct straight mounting profile, cross-hole position, sleeve dimensions, and retaining hardware—not diameter alone.
4. 49BX: A Bracketed HAYSTIX® for 3-Inch Square Tubing
The fourth-ranked 49BX bracketed hay spike uses a 49-inch by 1.75-inch straight square spear with a cross hole. It is rated at 3,500 pounds at a 30-inch load center and comes with the 175BU bracket, two 58X3U U-bolt assemblies, and the required fastening hardware.
Two different connections are involved. A cross-bolt retains the spear inside the 175BU bracket. The U-bolts attach that bracket to compatible 3-inch by 3-inch square frame tubing. The 49BX is therefore bracketed and serviceable without being a tapered or Doublenut® model.
This configuration can be useful when a properly designed attachment has suitable 3-inch square tubing and the operator wants accessible bracket hardware. Tubing size by itself does not guarantee fit. The frame design, bracket position, clearance, structure, spear spacing, and total attachment rating must also be correct.
5. 48SS: A Fluted Cross-Bolt Hayspears® Assembly
The 48SS cross-bolt bale spike completes the top five. It is a 48-inch by 1.625-inch fluted Hayspears® model rated at 3,000 pounds at a 30-inch load center. The complete assembly includes the S48S spear, 155 weld-in sleeve, cross-bolt, and mounting nut.
Like the 48FX, the 48SS uses aligned holes through a straight spear and sleeve. It does not use a tapered sleeve or retaining-nut mounting system. The fluted sides should be oriented as specified during installation, and the cross-bolt, nut, spear, sleeve, welds, and surrounding frame should be inspected regularly.
The 48SS works well for buyers who need a complete 1-5/8-inch cross-bolt assembly rather than a spear-only replacement. Buyers can compare it with other Hayspears® mounting styles before deciding which system matches the frame.
How to Choose Among These Five Models
Start with the existing mounting system or the engineered design of a new frame. A 49TXJ needs the correct tapered seating profile, sleeve, threads, and Doublenut® hardware. A 48TS uses its matching tapered 114T sleeve and conical nut. The 48FX and 48SS use straight cross-hole retention with the 155 sleeve. The 49BX uses the 175BU bracket and U-bolts for compatible 3-inch square tubing.
Next, confirm the required length and the actual load. Bale weight can change substantially with size, material, moisture, and density. A wet or tightly packed bale may weigh much more than a dry bale of similar dimensions. Compare the individual spear rating with the number and placement of spears, frame capacity, attachment rating, coupler, loader limits, machine data plate, counterweight requirements, and load center.
Safe operation matters as much as product selection. Pennsylvania State University Extension advises operators to use equipment that can safely handle the load and to follow careful practices when moving and storing large hay bales.
