Bale Spear Sleeves and Collars: Tapered vs. Cross Bolt Guide

A bale spear sleeve is the steel mounting component that connects a removable hay spear to a bale-handling frame. Farmers, repair shops, and equipment dealers often call the same part a bale spear collar. Both terms are correct. What matters is matching the sleeve’s mounting style, internal profile, spear diameter, hole location, and retaining hardware.

A sleeve is not simply a piece of tubing. Tapered collars have a machined seat for a tapered shank. Cross-bolt collars have a straight opening and aligned holes for mechanical retention. Two sleeves may look similar and still be incompatible. Tapered Sleeves vs. Cross-Bolt Sleeves

A tapered bale spear seats inside a matching tapered collar. Tightening the applicable conical nut draws the spear into the machined seat. Selected HAYSTIX® models use PRO-Link’s patented Doublenut® system, where a second jam nut locks against the first nut to help resist vibration-related loosening. Other tapered models use their specified single-nut arrangement.

The taper, shank dimensions, threads, seating depth, and nut system must all match. A 1.75 inch tapered spear does not belong in a straight 1.75 inch cross-hole sleeve merely because the nominal diameter is the same. A cross-bolt spear has a straight mounting section. It slides into a compatible sleeve until the holes align, and the specified bolt passes through both parts. The collar still welds into the frame. Terms such as “bolt on” describe spear retention; they do not mean the sleeve bolts directly onto the attachment.

Bracketed bale spears are a separate category. A 155BU, 165BU, or 175BU bracket is not the same as a 155 or 175 weld-in collar. Brackets attach to compatible frame tubing with U-bolts.

Bale Spear Diameter and Sleeve Families

PRO-Link bale spear sleeves generally fall into three diameter groups:

  • 1.375 inch multipurpose spears: Smaller Conus I tapered tines with product-specific capacities and applications.
  • 1.625 inch Hayspears®: Generally rated at 3,000 pounds at a 30 inch load center, with tapered, cross-bolt, or bracketed mounting options.
  • 1.75 inch HAYSTIX®: Generally rated at 3,500 pounds at a 30 inch load center, also available with tapered, cross-bolt, or bracketed mounting.

The individual product listing remains controlling. Diameter does not determine the capacity of the frame, welds, coupler, loader, or finished attachment. Always follow the lowest-rated component.

This chart covers common PRO-Link combinations rather than every specialty frame or older aftermarket mount. Product numbers beginning with S or SM normally identify spear-only replacements without a sleeve. Always compare the existing component, current product listing, and hardware before ordering. How to Install a Bale Spear Sleeve or Collar

A weld-in collar becomes part of the frame structure. Installation should be completed by a qualified fabricator familiar with agricultural attachments and bale-handling forces.

  1. Confirm the complete system. Identify the exact spear, sleeve, mounting method, frame material, hardware, tine spacing, and intended load.
  2. Remove the spear and hardware. Never weld with the tine, nuts, cross-bolt, key, or other retaining parts installed.
  3. Prepare the frame opening. Remove paint, rust, scale, grease, and contamination. The supporting steel must suit the collar and finished frame design.
  4. Set projection and orientation. Position the sleeve so the spear sits at the planned angle with adequate rear clearance. A cross-hole sleeve must leave room to install and remove the bolt. Keyed or curved systems must face the correct direction.
  5. Hold the collar straight. Use an appropriate jig or fixture. Multiple sleeves should maintain the planned spacing, angle, and projection.
  6. Use a suitable welding procedure. A qualified fabricator must select the joint preparation, process, filler material, weld size, sequence, and reinforcement for the actual materials. There is no universal weld recipe for every frame.
  7. Allow the assembly to cool. Inspect for distortion, cracking, blocked clearance, incomplete fusion, or spatter inside the sleeve before installing the spear.
  8. Protect the finished steel. Apply suitable corrosion protection without coating the tapered seat, threads, cross holes, or mating surfaces.

Welding can expose workers to fumes, ultraviolet radiation, burns, electrical shock, and fire. Review OSHA’s welding hazards and protective measures and follow all requirements that apply to the workplace and materials.

Installing a Spear in a Tapered Sleeve

After the collar cools, clean and inspect the internal taper, spear shank, threads, and retaining hardware. Dirt, corrosion, spatter, or damaged threads can prevent proper seating.

Insert the correct tapered shank and orient the tine as required. Install the specified conical nut and tighten it so the matching surfaces draw together. When the model uses Doublenut®, lock the jam nut against the first nut. A single-nut model should use only its specified system.

Do not substitute unverified hardware, add washers that change seating, or invent a torque value. Use the applicable instructions or contact PRO-Link when a specification is uncertain. Confirm that the spear is fully seated, correctly oriented, and free from visible looseness.

Installing a Spear in a Cross-Bolt Sleeve

Clean the straight sleeve, mounting section, holes, bolt, and nut. Slide the spear into the cooled collar until the openings align naturally. Insert the correct cross-bolt through both components and secure it with the specified retaining nut.

Never force a bolt through misaligned holes, enlarge the openings, or substitute a tapered tine. Misalignment may indicate the wrong spear, an incorrect sleeve, debris, heat distortion, or frame damage. Correct the cause before using the attachment.

Inspect the bolt for bending, stretching, thread damage, hole wear, or looseness. When the welded sleeve remains serviceable, a damaged removable spear can often be replaced without cutting the collar from the frame.

Inspection and Replacement Decisions

Check the spear point, shaft, mounting end, sleeve, nuts or bolt, frame, and welds regularly. Stop using the attachment if anything is loose, cracked, bent, distorted, badly worn, or unable to seat correctly. Replacing only the tine will not repair an enlarged collar, damaged cross hole, cracked weld, or weakened frame.

Questions About Bale Spear Sleeves

Are bale spear sleeves and bale spear collars the same thing?

In most product conversations, yes. Both terms describe the mounting component installed in the frame. The exact model and mounting profile matter more than which name is used.

Can spear diameter alone identify the correct sleeve?

No. Confirm the taper or straight shank, Conus profile when applicable, seating depth, threads, nut system, cross-hole location, bolt size, orientation, and clearance.

Can a tapered spear be installed in a cross-bolt collar?

No. A tapered spear seats in a machined collar and uses its specified nut system. A cross-bolt spear has a straight mounting section and aligned holes. Do not mix the two systems.

Should the spear remain installed while the sleeve is welded?

No. Weld only the empty collar into the frame. Allow it to cool and inspect the installation before fitting the spear and retaining hardware.
