Description
The HAYSTIX® SM49FXJ 49 inch fluted replacement bale spear restores a compatible heavy-duty hay frame without requiring the purchase of another sleeve. This spear-only component measures 49 inches long with a 1.75 inch tapered profile and is rated at 3,500 pounds at a 30 inch load center. It can handle suitable round bales, square bales, straw, silage, haylage, and cornstalk bales when installed in a properly rated attachment.
The SM49FXJ supplies the fluted spear only. A sleeve, conical retaining nut, and jam nut are not included. It is intended for operators who have a serviceable matching collar and the correct nut hardware, or fabricators building a system around a compatible tapered mount. Buyers needing the spear, 144T sleeve, and nuts together should select the complete 49FXJ assembly.
49 Inch Fluted Replacement Bale Spear for Dense Hay
A slight four-sided flute extends along the working shaft to the tip. This profile distinguishes the FXJ design from the square working shape of the 49TXJ family. As the point enters compacted material, the fluted shape introduces the spear progressively instead of pressing the full profile into the bale at once. This can support controlled penetration and smoother withdrawal from dense or moisture-heavy feed.
The 49 inch reach provides deep engagement for feeding, loading trailers, staging bales, and moving hay between fields, barns, and feeding areas. A properly matched frame may be carried by a tractor front-end loader, skid steer, telehandler, wheel loader, or another agricultural machine. Those equipment categories describe possible applications rather than direct fit. Compatibility depends on the sleeve, nuts, frame structure, spear spacing, coupler, working clearance, attachment rating, and machine limits.
PRO-Link’s 49FXJ test demonstration shows the fluted spear design tested at 4,200 pounds. This was a demonstrated test load, not a capacity, working limit, or permission to exceed the product specification. The official individual-spear rating remains 3,500 pounds at a 30 inch load center.
Matching the Taper, Sleeve, and Retaining Hardware
The SM49FXJ is not limited to the PRO-Link 144T collar. It may fit another sleeve that correctly seats the same 1.75 inch Conus II tapered mounting profile. Inside diameter alone cannot confirm compatibility. Compare the taper, seating depth, threads, nut arrangement, available clearance, sleeve support, and alignment before ordering or installation.
PRO-Link’s 144T Conus II weld-in sleeve is one verified option and is the collar supplied with the complete 49FXJ assembly. When reusing another collar, inspect its inside surface, surrounding frame, and welds. Do not reuse a sleeve that is loose, cracked, distorted, heavily corroded, excessively worn, or unable to seat the spear correctly.
Insert the tapered shank into the matching sleeve, install the separately supplied conical nut, and tighten it to draw the mating surfaces together. The jam nut then locks against the first nut to help resist vibration-related loosening. The Doublenut® mounting-system guide explains the connection and inspection process in more detail.
The attachment’s capacity is limited by its lowest-rated component, including the spear, sleeve, nuts, welds, frame, coupler, loader, and machine. Inspect the point, flutes, shaft, taper, threads, hardware, sleeve, and frame regularly. Keep the bale low during travel and avoid sudden movements; Penn State Extension offers additional large bale handling safety guidance. The SM49FXJ is covered by PRO-Link’s one-year limited warranty against manufacturer’s defects, subject to the complete terms.
Questions & Answers
What comes with the SM49FXJ?
The SM49FXJ includes one 49 inch fluted tapered spear. It does not include a sleeve, conical retaining nut, or jam nut. Select the complete 49FXJ assembly when all mounting components are required.
Is the SM49FXJ compatible only with the 144T sleeve?
No. The 144T is one verified compatible sleeve, but another collar may work when its full Conus II mounting profile, depth, threads, nut arrangement, support, and clearance match correctly.
Does the 4,200 pound test increase the spear’s capacity?
No. The 4,200 pound result is a test demonstration only. Operators must use the published 3,500 pound rating at a 30 inch load center and follow the lowest rating in the completed handling system.
