SM49FXJ 49-Inch Fluted Bale Spear – Tapered Hay Spike

The HAYSTIX® SM49FXJ 49-inch fluted bale spear is a spear-only replacement for heavy bale-handling frames that use a compatible sleeve for a 1.75-inch tapered spear. It carries a published rating of 3,500 pounds at a 30-inch load center. Its length and construction make it a practical choice for handling round bales, square bales, straw, silage, haylage, and cornstalk bales.

Because the SM49FXJ is sold without a sleeve or mounting nuts, it suits operators replacing a worn spear while keeping a serviceable mounting system. It can also be used by fabricators who already have a properly sized sleeve that seats this 1.75-inch tapered mounting profile. The spear is not limited to the PRO-Link 144T sleeve, although the 144T is one compatible option and is supplied with the complete 49FXJ assembly.

Fluted Shape for Deep, Controlled Bale Engagement

The SM49FXJ uses a four-sided fluted profile that gradually narrows toward the point. That shape helps the tine work into tightly packed material without forcing the full shaft width into the bale at once. Reduced resistance can make insertion and withdrawal smoother during feeding, stacking, trailer unloading, and daily bale movement.

Its 49-inch reach provides deep engagement in properly sized bales. This helps the carrier maintain contact while the operator lifts and places the load. The fluted shape also gives the spear a consistent working profile around its sides, so a qualified installer can orient it correctly for the frame and mounting system being used.

When mounted in a properly engineered hay frame, this bale spear for tractor equipment can help a front-end loader lift, carry, stack, and place feed bales. The same tine can serve as a skid steer bale spear in tighter feeding areas or a front-end loader hay spear on larger equipment. It can also be incorporated into suitable telehandler, wheel-loader, and bale-mover attachments. AG-GO offers different styles of hay frames that use sleeve-mounted bale spears. These are common applications, not universal direct fit. Compatibility depends on the sleeve, frame structure, spear spacing, coupler, clearances, attachment rating, and machine limits.

Compatible 1.75-Inch Sleeves and Tapered Installation

The SM49FXJ does not require only a 144T collar. It can be used with a properly fitting sleeve designed to seat its 1.75-inch tapered spear profile. The sleeve must provide the correct inside diameter, seating depth, support, and clearance for the threaded mounting end and applicable nut-retention system. Diameter is important, but the complete mounting fit should be verified before installation.

For a replacement, inspect the existing collar and surrounding frame before reusing them. The inside of the sleeve should be clean and free of cracks, heavy corrosion, distortion, excessive wear, or material that could prevent full seating. Insert the tapered mounting end through the compatible sleeve and install the correct retaining nuts. Tightening the hardware draws the spear into its seat and holds it in position. This differs from a straight cross-hole spear, which locks into its sleeve with a bolt through aligned holes.

The 144T tapered bale-spear sleeve is available when a PRO-Link sleeve is preferred or the existing collar also needs replacement. Customers who need the spear, 144T sleeve, and nut hardware together should choose the complete HAYSTIX® 49FXJ package.

The published 3,500-pound rating applies to the individual spear at a 30-inch load center. The capacity of the completed equipment is always limited by its lowest-rated part, including the frame, sleeve, welds, coupler, loader, and machine. Keep the bale low during travel and avoid sudden turns or stops. Inspect the point, flutes, shaft, mounting taper, threads, nuts, sleeve, and frame regularly. The SM49FXJ is covered by PRO-Link’s one-year limited warranty against manufacturer’s defects, subject to the complete warranty terms.

Questions & Answers

Is the SM49FXJ compatible only with a 144T sleeve?

No. It can fit another properly sized sleeve that correctly seats its 1.75-inch tapered mounting profile. Verify the sleeve’s inside diameter, seating depth, support, and nut clearance before installation.

What is included with the SM49FXJ?

The SM49FXJ is the 49-inch fluted spear only. A sleeve and mounting nuts are not included. Choose the complete 49FXJ package if those components are needed.

What jobs suit this 49-inch fluted bale spear?

It provides deep engagement for lifting, feeding, stacking, and transporting suitable bales. Buyers comparing the best tapered hay spike options should still match the spear to the existing sleeve, frame, bale, and machine.
