Description
SM39TXJ Hay Tine – 39-Inch Replacement Bale Spear
The HAYSTIX® SM39TXJ 39-inch replacement bale spear is made for operators who already have a compatible tapered sleeve installed and need to replace the working tine without purchasing another complete assembly. Its compact length provides useful control around feeders, barns, trailers, and closely stacked hay while retaining the published HAYSTIX® capacity of 3,500 pounds at a 30-inch load center.
This spear-only model has a 1.75-inch square profile with a Conus II tapered mounting end. It does not include a sleeve, collar, mounting nuts, or attachment frame. Before ordering, compare the existing mount with the required taper, seating depth, thread clearance, and retaining system rather than relying on diameter alone.
Compact Square Hay Spike for Dense Forage
The SM39TXJ uses a square tapered shaft, not the fluted profile found on HAYSTIX® FX and FXJ spears. Its pointed geometry helps the hay tine enter tightly packed crop material, while the shorter 39-inch length makes it easier to position in restricted working areas. Heat-treated high-strength steel supports repeated agricultural lifting when the spear is installed and used within the complete system’s rating.
This compact hay stab can be considered for handling:
- Round bales of grass hay, alfalfa, Bermuda hay, and prairie hay
- Square hay and straw bales supported by a properly designed frame
- Cornstalk bales and other tightly compressed crop residue
- Wet hay, haylage, and silage bales
- Smaller or dense bales handled around livestock feeders
Bale diameter, width, shape, moisture, density, and weight all affect stability. A 39-inch spear may offer better maneuverability than a longer hay fork, but the tine still needs enough engagement to support the intended bale. Large square bales may require multiple primary spears or stabilizer tines, depending on the frame design. Wrapped forage also requires operating methods that limit film damage.
The SM39TXJ may be installed in compatible tractor-loader hay frames, skid steer bale spear attachments, telehandler frames, front-end loader bale movers, livestock feeding equipment, and custom agricultural builds. It may also replace a tine in certain AG-GO hay-handling attachments. These are application examples, not a promise of universal fit; confirm the exact sleeve and frame before purchase.
Check Sleeve and Nut-System Compatibility Before Installation
The matching PRO-Link collar for this Conus II profile is the 144T 1.75-inch tapered weld-in sleeve. However, the SM39TXJ is not limited to a sleeve carrying the 144T part number. Another sleeve can be suitable when it is specifically made to seat the same 1.75-inch Conus II spear and provides the correct internal taper, seating depth, thread clearance, weld installation, and structural rating. A 1.75-inch inside diameter by itself does not prove compatibility.
Once the tapered mounting end is seated correctly, the applicable retaining nut draws or holds the spear firmly in the collar. PRO-Link’s Doublenut® bale-spear guide explains the conical retaining nut and secondary jam nut used on compatible HAYSTIX® assemblies. Because this replacement hay spike is sold without mounting hardware, reuse existing nuts only when they are the correct parts and remain in serviceable condition.
Inspect the sleeve, spear seat, threads, nuts, welds, attachment frame, and loader connection before lifting. Do not operate with bent, cracked, badly worn, or loose components. Safe working capacity is always controlled by the lowest-rated component in the complete machine and attachment system.
Operators who need the sleeve and locking hardware should compare the complete HAYSTIX® 39TXJ Tapered Bale Stab assembly. For additional bale engagement, the longer SM49TXJ replacement hay spear may be another option. The SM39TXJ is covered by PRO-Link’s one-year limited warranty against manufacturer’s defects.
Questions & Answers
Does the SM39TXJ include a sleeve or mounting nuts?
No. The SM39TXJ is the hay tine only. A compatible sleeve/collar, retaining nuts, frame, and machine attachment are not included with this replacement model.
How do I know whether it fits my existing hay frame?
Confirm that the installed sleeve is designed for the same 1.75-inch Conus II profile. Check the internal taper, seating depth, thread clearance, retaining hardware, weld condition, and system capacity—not only the sleeve’s inside diameter.
What is the capacity of this replacement spear?
The HAYSTIX® SM39TXJ 39-inch replacement bale spear is rated at 3,500 pounds at a 30-inch load center. The loader and complete attachment must carry equal or higher ratings for that published spear capacity to apply.
