Description
The Hayspears® 39SS 39 inch cross-bolt hay spear is a complete assembly for building or repairing compatible bale-handling frames. It combines a 39 inch by 1.625 inch fluted tine with the matching 155 weld-in sleeve or collar, cross-bolt, and retaining nut. The individual spear is rated at 3,000 pounds at a 30 inch load center, giving operators a practical balance of bale engagement and maneuverability for feeding, loading, stacking, and routine hay movement.
The 39SS is the current PRO-Link Hayspears® replacement for the discontinued 39SX. It remains a 1.625 inch Hayspears® product and uses a straight cross-hole mounting system. It is not a tapered HAYSTIX® spear and does not use a conical nut or Doublenut® connection.
Fluted 39 Inch Cross-Bolt Hay Spear for Everyday Bale Work
The 39 inch length reaches farther into a bale than a compact 33 inch tine while providing more working clearance than a 48 inch spear. That middle length can be useful around livestock feeders, barns, trailers, and storage areas where dependable engagement and maneuverability both matter.
Fluted sides help the spear enter compacted hay and release with less surface contact than a plain shaft. Install the fluted sides parallel to the ground so the working profile is oriented as intended. The tine can handle suitable round or square hay, straw, silage, haylage, and cornstalk bales when the completed carrier supports the load.
Bale dimensions alone do not establish compatibility. Moisture, density, shape, total weight, spear position, and center of gravity all affect handling. Large or unstable bales may require additional primary spears or stabilizer tines in a properly engineered frame. Keep the load low during travel and avoid sudden turns or stops.
The 39SS may be incorporated into compatible tractor-loader frames, skid steer attachments, three-point bale movers, telehandler carriers, and custom agricultural equipment. These are fabrication applications, not universal direct-fit claims. Verify the frame, coupler, spear spacing, welds, clearances, machine capacity, and intended bale.
Installing the 155 Sleeve and Replacing the Discontinued 39SX
The included 155 cross-bolt hay fork collar is welded into suitable frame steel without the spear or retaining hardware installed. A qualified fabricator should determine the sleeve position, projection, support, alignment, and welding procedure. Allow the frame to cool, then inspect the collar for distortion or weld spatter before installing the tine.
Slide the straight mounting end into the collar until the cross holes align naturally. Insert the supplied bolt through the sleeve and spear, then secure it with the retaining nut. Do not force the bolt through misaligned holes or substitute a tapered spear. PRO-Link’s bale spear sleeve and collar guide explains the difference between cross-bolt and tapered systems and provides more installation guidance.
When replacing a discontinued 39SX, inspect the existing frame, sleeve, holes, bolt, and welds before deciding which parts to change. Choose the complete 39SS when a new tine, 155 sleeve, bolt, and nut are required. If the installed 155 collar and hardware remain correctly matched and serviceable, the S39S spear-only replacement may be more appropriate.
The 3,000 pound rating applies to the individual spear at the stated load center. It does not increase the capacity of the sleeve, welds, frame, coupler, loader, or machine. Inspect the complete mounting system regularly. The 39SS is covered by PRO-Link’s one-year limited warranty against manufacturer’s defects. This exact assembly is also listed by K+K Veterinary Supply.
